MIEN means region. We work in one: the corridor between the indigo terraces of Ha Giang and the cotton looms of Nam Dinh, four hundred kilometres apart, worked by families who have been at it longer than any of us.
Why the names are not in English
A jacket called Field Jacket 02 tells you nothing. Cham tells you it was dyed in indigo, which is what cham means, which is the plant growing on the hillside in the photograph. The word is the shortest possible version of the whole story, and it survives translation because we give you the meaning right next to it.
Twenty-four garments, twenty-four words. Learn them and you have learned something about the place, which is more than most wardrobes offer.
From plant to parcel
The vat
Indigo leaves are fermented for three days in clay vats at Hoang Su Phi. No synthetic fixative. The blue keeps moving for the first year of wear, which is the point.
The loom
Cotton and hemp woven at Hoa Lu weaving house, Nam Dinh. Nineteen looms, none of them new.
The cut
Small runs of 90 to 140 pieces. If a batch sells out we wait for the next harvest rather than switching mills.
The repair
Each piece is made to be worn and cared for over time.
